International Trade Substitute Lesson Plan

Use this 50 minutes substitute plan to teach international trade through one concrete decision. Students calculate comparative advantage and trace one trade policy and one currency change. The directions are written so a substitute who has never taught economics can run the period. Students work from the page, show their reasoning, and leave one product that is quick to check.
The classroom prompt
Find all four opportunity costs and a mutually beneficial trade rate. Then explain the domestic price and quantity effects of a tariff and how currency appreciation changes exports.
Put the question where every student can see it and do not supply vocabulary before students commit to an answer. Their first explanation becomes the evidence you use during the debrief.
Materials and setup
Provide the output table: Country A makes 20 computers or 10 wheat; Country B makes 12 computers or 12 wheat. Students need paper and calculators.

Answer key and teacher moves
- A's cost of one computer is 0.5 wheat; its cost of one wheat is 2 computers.
- B's cost of one computer is 1 wheat; its cost of one wheat is 1 computer.
- A has comparative advantage in computers, B in wheat, and a rate between 0.5 and 1 wheat per computer can benefit both.
- A tariff raises the domestic price, reduces consumption and imports, raises domestic production and government revenue, and creates deadweight loss; appreciation reduces exports and raises imports.
Do not give credit for the correct direction alone. Ask students to name the changed determinant, identify the curve or quantity that changes, and connect the change to the final outcome. A complete explanation contains a cause, a model move, and a result.
What to collect
Collect the cost table, one valid trade rate, tariff graph, and appreciation chain.
Most likely misconception: Students confuse absolute advantage with comparative advantage or say appreciation makes domestic exports cheaper abroad.
Support and extension: Require units on every opportunity cost. Extend by linking a current-account deficit to a financial-account surplus.
A clean closing question
End with: What changed, what stayed fixed, and what evidence proves your conclusion? That sentence works as the final written check because it forces students to separate a cause from the movement it produces. Collect it, scan for the misconception above, and use the first three minutes of the next class to repair the pattern if needed.
