Use this 35 minutes classroom activity to teach opportunity cost through one concrete decision. Students experience a binding constraint and distinguish tradeoffs from one opportunity cost. Students create the economic outcome themselves before naming the model. Resist explaining the result during the first round. The debrief is where the experience becomes economics.

The classroom prompt

Groups design a 60-minute exam review using only 12 time tokens. Midway through, a fire drill removes three tokens. They must revise the plan and identify the most valuable station lost because of the new constraint.

Put the question where every student can see it and do not supply vocabulary before students commit to an answer. Their first explanation becomes the evidence you use during the debrief.

Materials and setup

Give each group 12 time tokens and six possible review stations costing 2 to 5 tokens each. Require at least one quantitative and one graph station.

Answer key and teacher moves

  • The time limit is the scarce resource and makes not all valued stations simultaneously possible.
  • The opportunity cost of the final removal is the highest-valued station the group excludes at the margin.
  • The original full list of rejected stations describes tradeoffs but is not itself the opportunity cost.
  • A different ranking can produce a different rational plan; the concept requires consistency, not identical preferences.

Do not give credit for the correct direction alone. Ask students to name the changed determinant, identify the curve or quantity that changes, and connect the change to the final outcome. A complete explanation contains a cause, a model move, and a result.

What to collect

Collect the before-and-after schedules and one marginal decision statement.

Most likely misconception: Students name the least-preferred rejected station instead of the next-best feasible alternative.

Support and extension: Use picture cards and fixed token costs. Extend by allowing groups to buy one extra token at the cost of a homework point and analyze the marginal choice.

A clean closing question

End with: What changed, what stayed fixed, and what evidence proves your conclusion? That sentence works as the final written check because it forces students to separate a cause from the movement it produces. Collect it, scan for the misconception above, and use the first three minutes of the next class to repair the pattern if needed.
