What is Human Capital?
Human capital is the knowledge, skills, and health embodied in workers that make them more productive.
It is built through education, training, and experience. Investing in human capital raises labor productivity and is a key driver of long-run growth. It shifts the production possibilities curve and long-run aggregate supply outward.
Human Capital: a worked example
Suppose a factory runs 20 assembly workers who together finish 400 units per shift, so output per worker is 400 ÷ 20 = 20 units. The firm pays $30,000 for a six-week program in machine setup and quality inspection. Afterward the same 20 workers finish 480 units per shift, or 480 ÷ 20 = 24 units each, a productivity gain of (24 - 20) ÷ 20 × 100 = 20%. No machines were bought and nobody was hired, so the entire gain came from human capital. If each extra unit adds $5 of profit, the 80 additional units per shift are worth $400, and the training repays itself after $30,000 ÷ $400 = 75 shifts.
The mistake students make with human capital
Students routinely treat hiring more workers as a rise in human capital. The confusion is understandable because both raise total output, but human capital is the skill, knowledge, and health carried inside each worker, so it is measured per person rather than by headcount. Adding ten untrained hires increases the labor input while leaving human capital per worker flat, and it can even pull average productivity down. On an exam, credit an increase in human capital only to schooling, training, experience, or health gains that make existing workers more productive.

What is the difference between human capital and physical capital?
Human capital lives in people: the schooling, training, experience, and health that make a worker more productive. Physical capital is the tangible stock of machines, tools, buildings, and equipment that workers use. A welding course builds human capital, while the welding robot is physical capital. Both raise output per worker and both shift long-run aggregate supply right, but human capital walks out the door when an employee leaves, which is one reason firms hesitate to fund broadly transferable training.
How does human capital increase economic growth?
Human capital raises the output each worker produces per hour, and output per worker is what sets long-run living standards. A more skilled workforce also adopts new technology faster and makes fewer costly errors, so identical machines yield more. In AP terms, rising human capital shifts the production possibilities curve outward and pushes long-run aggregate supply right, raising potential output. The effect builds slowly because schooling and on-the-job experience accumulate over years rather than quarters.
Is a college degree human capital?
Earning a college degree builds human capital, though the diploma itself is not the capital. The skills, knowledge, and habits of analysis picked up along the way are what raise a worker's productivity, and the certificate mainly lets employers observe them cheaply. Apprenticeships, on-the-job training, military service, and disciplined self-study build human capital too, with no degree involved. Economists also count health as human capital, since a healthier worker misses fewer hours and works more effectively while present.
